Using Zoom for Amazon WorkSpaces

Last Updated:

Zoom has extended support for virtual desktops with a Windows VDI Plugin for Amazon WorkSpaces (AWS). The new plugin uses the connection between the AWS application and the desktop to provide the VDI Zoom Meeting client with the ability to offload audio and video through the VDI Plugin.

This article covers:

Prerequisites for using Zoom for Amazon WorkSpaces

  • Zoom desktop client:
    • Windows: 5.12.6 or higher
  • VDI plugin
    • Windows: 5.12.6, or compatible auto-update package
  • Amazon WorkSpaces client:
    • Windows: 5.4.0.3226 or higher

How to download and install Amazon WorkSpaces Windows client

  1. Before installing Zoom software for Amazon WorkSpace, download and install the latest version of the Amazon WorkSpaces Windows client.
  2. Complete the installation.
  3. Enable Amazon WorkSpaces for Zoom Meeting Media Plugin support.
  4. Install the VDI Zoom Meeting client.
  5. Install the Zoom VDI plugin.

The new VDI plugin and Zoom Meeting client combination will send your video and audio directly to the Zoom meeting while Zoom remains integrated with applications and documents in your Amazon WorkSpace.

A Group Policy Object (GPO) must be added to Amazon WorkSpaces before providing the Zoom VDI solution to users.

How to understand VDI version compatibility

Note the following requirements when installing the VDI Zoom Meeting client and Zoom VDI Plugin. While the initial release requires installing version 5.12.6 or higher, future updates for new releases will update the version of the VDI Zoom Meeting client (installed on the virtual desktop) first.

Versions of the VDI Zoom Meeting client are backward compatible with older versions of the VDI plugin. After updating the VDI Zoom Meeting client in the virtual desktop, users can update the VDI plugin to the matching version. If the VDI plugin is updated before the VDI Zoom Meeting client, the connection between the Zoom Meeting client and VDI plugin will fail.

Note: You can confirm VDI optimization.

How to download and install the VDI Zoom Meeting client

Optimization for Zoom Meetings and Amazon WorkSpaces requires installing two software packages. You must install a compatible version of the VDI Zoom Meeting client.

If you do not have administrator privileges, you will need to work with IT to install the VDI Zoom Meeting client for your desktop. For deployments that provide Amazon WorkSpaces for many users, IT will likely handle updating everyone with the required version.

If you have administrative privileges for your Amazon WorkSpaces desktop, you can download and install the VDI Zoom Meeting client while connected to your Amazon WorkSpace desktop.

To download and install the VDI Zoom Meeting client as an administrator:

  1. In your Amazon WorkSpace desktop, open a web browser and access VDI releases and downloads.
  2. Access the 5.12.6 release section.
  3. Click the 5.12.6 accordion to access the links for the release’s software, then select Click here to download VDI client 5.12.6.
  4. When the installation package has been downloaded, start the installation and follow the instructions to complete the installation of the VDI Zoom Meeting client.

How to install the VDI plugin

To complete your installation to support Amazon WorkSpaces, you must install the Zoom VDI plugin on the Windows workstation where the Amazon WorkSpaces client is installed.

  1. In your Windows workstation open a web browser and access VDI releases and downloads.
  2. Access the 5.12.6 release section.
  3. Click the 5.12.6 accordion to access the links for the release’s software.
  4. Under the Amazon WorkSpace section, click the link for the Windows Universal Installer (Phone and Meetings).
  5. When the installation package has been downloaded, start the installation for the VDI plugin.
A Select Installation Type dialog box will appear.
  6. In the dialog box, select Custom, then select the AWS VDI Plugin (Amazon WorkSpace plugin) checkbox.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Follow the instructions to complete the installation of the VDI plugin.

Note: If you do not see the AWS VDI Plugin checkbox selection, confirm that you downloaded Windows Universal Installer version 5.12.6 or higher.

How to confirm Amazon WorkSpace optimization

After installing the VDI Plugin, you can verify that the optimization solution is working:

  1. Start your Amazon WorkSpace client and connect to your Amazon WorkSpaces desktop.
  2. Open the Zoom VDI Meeting client and select the Home tab.
  3. In the top right corner, click the Settings settings-button__1_.png icon.
A Settings dialog box will appear.
  4. In the Settings dialog box’s navigation menu, click Statistics, then click the VDI tab.
  5. By VDI Plugin Status, verify that the state is Connected.
This will confirm that the VDI plugin has been loaded and optimization for your Zoom Meetings will be used with your Amazon WorkSpace session.

After confirming the VDI Plugin Status is connected, it is recommended to check the Video video-button.png and Audio audio-button.png settings to confirm your preferred devices are selected for use with your Zoom meetings.

How to troubleshoot Zoom for Amazon WorkSpace

If the VDI Plugin Status is not displaying Connected, first, double-check that you have installed the required releases of the three components required:

  1. Amazon WorkSpaces client (version 5.4.0.3226 or higher)
  2. VDI Zoom Meeting client (version 5.12.6 or higher)
  3. Zoom VDI Plugin for Windows (version 5.12.6 or compatible version for Zoom host version*)

For releases of Zoom software after release 5.12.6, confirm that the version of the VDI Zoom Meeting client is equal to or higher than the version of the Zoom VDI Plugin installed on the Windows workstation connecting to Amazon WorkSpace.

How to use the Disable Policy

Providing an optimization solution for Amazon WorkSpaces is intended to not only improve the Zoom Meeting experience but also offload processing required when participating in a Zoom meeting if the VDI Plugin is not available.

However, for administrators with concerns about the use of the VDI Plugin, the following is an additional registry key that can be added to the virtual desktop to disable the connection attempt from the VDI Zoom Meeting client to the VDI Plugin:

Key: SOFTWARE\Policies\Zoom\Zoom Meetings\VDI
Value: DisableAWSPlatform
Value Type: DWORD
Value Description:
0: AWS Platform support is enabled (default)
1: AWS Platform support is disabled

Limitations for Zoom for Amazon WorkSpace

The Zoom team in collaboration with Amazon has made every effort to include the full range of features supported for all our VDI platforms and plugins. The following are some known limitations that are currently not supported:

  • High DPI Mode: Amazon WorkSpaces provides users with the option to change the resolution of the Workspace session through a High DPI option. The Zoom VDI Meeting client does not currently support changing to High DPI Mode. The feature is being investigated for support in a future release.
  • Multiple monitors: If your Windows workstation is connected to more than one monitor, there is a known issue with Zoom Meetings and the VDI plugin being unable to display video. This is being investigated to find a solution for a future release.
  • 3D avatars: The 3D Avatar feature for Amazon WorkSpaces is currently disabled. Support for this feature is being investigated for a future release.
  • AWS and RDP: For users who connect to their Amazon WorkSpace using RDP as well as the Amazon WorkSpaces client, there is a known conflict if you connect using Amazon WorkSpace after using RDP. If the VDI Zoom Meeting client is still running on the desktop when you switch from RDP to Amazon Workspace for your connection, you will need to restart the VDI Zoom Meeting client to connect to the VDI plugin.
