Meeting connector core concepts

Starting September 13, 2022 Zoom will require users running the Meeting Connector to update to a minimal version of 4.8.20220815.130. As a part of this update, if utilizing the Recording Connector, the minimal version will need to be updated to 5.1.0.65.20211116. 

Zoom offers a public or hybrid cloud service. In the hybrid cloud service, you deploy meeting communication servers known as the Zoom Meeting Connector within your company's internal network. In doing so, user and meeting metadata are managed in the public cloud while the meetings are hosted in your private cloud. All meeting traffic, including video, voice, and data sharing, goes through the on-premise Zoom Meeting Connector. 

The Zoom Meeting Controller is packaged as an OVF and can be deployed onto any virtualization platform.

Virtual Machine types and processes

There are two types of VMs in the Zoom Meeting Connector: 

• Zone Controller VM
• Multimedia Router VM

In the Controller VM, there are two server processes:

• ZC, stands for Zone Controller
• MMR, stands for Multimedia Router 

• MMR, stands for Multimedia Router

Deployment considerations

The simplest Meeting Connector setup is with one Controller VM deployed. 

For high availability, you can deploy another Controller VM.

• If the ZC process in Controller 1 is down, the other ZC process in Controller 2 will take over automatically.

Each MMR process supports up to 200 concurrent meeting participants simultaneously. If you deploy one Controller VM, your Meeting Connector supports 200 concurrent participants and up to 100 meetings. If you deploy another Controller VM for High Availability, your total capacity increases to 400 participants and 200 meetings.

You can also deploy additional MMR VMs and link those to the Controller VM, to increase the participants' capacity. 

• In one Controller VM, you can deploy up to 200 MMR VMs.

Networking schema

The Meeting Connector uses the public cloud for the following services:

• Notification Services for meeting invitation notifications on mobile devices and PC
• Web Application Services for user and meeting metadata such as login and scheduled meeting list
• Cloud Controller for syncing meeting status

Network diagram

1. TCP/TLS connection to gateway.zoom.us for notification via port 8804 or 443.
2. HTTPS connection to zoom.us for user and meeting management via port 443
3. HTTPS connection to zoom.us for monitoring via port 443
4. TLS connection for syncing cloud controller status via port 8803 or 443.
5. TLS connection to ZC via port 8802 or 443.
6. UDP and TLS connection to MMR via port 8801 and 443 respectively.

Note: SSL is enabled by default on the VMs, and will use SSL Encryption for network communication.
