Sending screen captures, files, photos, and celebration reactions

In addition to messages, Zoom Chat allows you to send screenshots, images, files, and chat reactions to a chat contact, group chat, or channel. These features are available for both Zoom's standard chat encryption and advanced chat encryption.

You can also send and play video files through chat in the Zoom desktop client and mobile app.

Notes:

  • The maximum supported file size is 512MB.
  • Account owners and admins can set up file transfer controls to specify the file types and file size limits that their users can send and receive.

Prerequisites for sending screen captures, files, photos, and celebration reactions

  • Zoom desktop client
    • Windows: 5.2.0 or higher
    • macOS: 5.2.0 or higher
    • Linux: 5.2.0 or higher
  • Zoom mobile app
    • Android: 5.2.0 or higher
    • iOS: 5.2.0 or higher
  • Chat features enabled by admin

How to send files and images in Zoom Chat

  1. Sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
  2. Open the chat where you need to send the screenshot, image, or file. You can start a new chat with these methods:
    • Click the Add icon next to Recent to start a new chat with one of your contacts.
    • Under Recent, click a contact to view chat history and continue to chat with them. Contacts have a status icon before their name.
    • Under Recent, click a channel (indicated by the group icon before the name) to view the channel's chat history and send messages to channel members.
    • On the Contacts tab , hover over a contact's name and click the chat icon .
  3. Follow one of the sections below based on what you want to send:

  1. Click Screenshot above the chat box.
  2. Click and drag your mouse around the portion of your screen that you want to capture, then add any additional annotations, such as arrows, lines, boxes, or text. 
  3. Click Capture.
    After you have captured the desired content, it will appear in your chat window.
  4. (Optional) Enter any text to accompany the screenshot. 
  5. Press Enter to send. 

Send a file

Note: Your account admin may have limited who you can send and receive files from.

  1. Click File above the chat box, or click and drag the file to the chat box. 
  2. Select the file source. 
    Note: You can also select a third-party service, if your admin enabled file sharing integrations.
  3. Browse the file system and select the file you want to send.
    When the file is uploaded, click × if you want to cancel the upload. 
  4. (Optional) Enter any text to accompany the file. 
  5. Press Enter to send. 
    The chat window will show the filename and a green checkbox indicating that it was sent successfully. If you sent an image, the image will display directly in chat.

    Note: If sending a video file, recipients will be able play the video directly in the chat window. 

Send a celebration reaction

Enter Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary in the chat box. The reaction will briefly appear on your chat window.

Note: The Happy Anniversary reaction requires version 5.11.0 or higher. 

  1. Sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
  2. Open the chat where you need to send the screenshot, image, or file. You can start a new chat with these methods:
    • Click the Add icon next to Recent to start a new chat with one of your contacts.
    • Under Recent, click a contact to view chat history and continue to chat with them. Contacts have a status icon before their name.
    • Under Recent, click a channel (indicated by the group icon before the name) to view the channel's chat history and send messages to channel members.
    • On the Contacts tab , hover over a contact's name and click the chat icon .

Send a file

  1. Click  File above the chat box, or click and drag the file to the chat box. 
  2. Select the file source. 
  3. Browse the file system and select the file you want to send.
    When the file is uploaded, click × if you want to cancel the upload. 
  4. Press Open to send the selected file. 
    The chat window will show the filename and a green checkbox indicating that it was sent successfully. If you sent an image, the image will display directly in chat.

Send a celebration reaction

Enter Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary in the chat box. The reaction will briefly appear on your chat window.

Note: The Happy Anniversary reaction requires version 5.11.0 or higher.

  1. Sign in to the Zoom mobile app.
  2. Open the chat where you need to send the screenshot, image, or file. You can start a new chat with these methods:
    • Tap the pencil icon in the top-right corner of the Meet & Chat screen.
    • Tap Contacts, tap a contact's name, then tap Chat .

Send a screenshot

To send a screenshot, you will need to take a screenshot using your device's settings and then following the steps below for sending an image.

Send an image

  1. Tap the plus sign .
  2. Tap Photo Album .
  3. Tap the circle in each image to select them.
  4. Tap Done.
    The image(s) will immediately send to the contact or channel. 

Use the camera to take and send a photo

  1. Tap the plus sign .
  2. Tap Take a Photo .
  3. Use the camera to take a photo with the phone's built-in camera. 
  4. Tap Confirm to send, or Retake.
    The image(s) will immediately send to the contact or channel. 

Send a file

  1. Tap the plus sign .
  2. Tap Send a File .
  3. Tap where the file is located.
  4. Browse and tap the file you want to send. If you select a third-party service like Dropbox, you will be prompted to sign in and grant Zoom access to your account.
  5. Tap Send.
  6. It will appear in the chat window with the file name and a check box indicating that it was sent successfully.
    Note: If sending a video file, recipients will be able play the video directly in the chat window. 

Send a celebration reaction

Enter Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary in the chat box. The reaction will briefly appear on your chat window.
