Muting your microphone when joining a meeting

As a meeting participant, you can can choose to mute your microphone by default when joining a meeting by enabling Mute my microphone when joining a meeting. Once this setting is enabled, your microphone is automatically disabled/muted upon joining each meeting, and you must manually enable audio to unmute. This setting is useful for participants who are in loud environments or participants who join a meeting late. This setting can prevent disruptions and noise in a meeting. 

Prerequisites for automatically muting your microphone when joining meetings

  • Zoom desktop client
    • Windows: 5.0.0 or higher
    • macOS: 5.0.0 or higher
    • Linux: 5.0.0 or higher
  • Zoom mobile app
    • Android: 5.0.0 or higher
    • iOS: 5.0.0 or higher

How to enable Mute my microphone when joining a meeting

Disable audio by default

To enable Mute my microphone when joining a meeting:

  1. Sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
  2. Click your profile picture, then click Settings.
  3. Click Audio audio-button.png.
  4. Select the Mute my microphone when joining a meeting check box.

Disable video or audio by default when joining a meeting

You can also disable audio or video before joining a meeting by toggling the following options after clicking Join. 

To disable audio or video before joining a meeting:

  1. Sign in to the Zoom desktop client and join a meeting.
  2. Select the Do not connect to audio check box.
  3. (Optional) Select the Turn off my video check box if you want to disable your video.
  4. Click Join.

Android | iOS

Disable audio by default

To enable Always Mute My Microphone (Android) or Mute My Microphone (iOS):

  1. Sign in to the Zoom mobile app.
  2. At the bottom of the screen, tap Settings settings-button.png. 
  3. Tap Meetings.
  4. Tap the toggle next to Always Mute My Microphone (Android) or Mute My Microphone (iOS).

You can also disable audio or video before joining a meeting by toggling the following options after clicking Join.

To disable audio or video before joining a meeting:

  1. Sign in to the Zoom mobile app and join a meeting.
  2. Under Join Options, tap the Don't Connect To Audio toggle.
  3. (Optional) Tap the Turn Off My Video toggle to disable your video.
  4. Tap Join.
