Raising your hand in webinars and meetings

The raise hand feature in meetings and webinars allows meeting participants, attendees, panelists, co-hosts, and the host to raise their hands to indicate that they need something from the host, co-host, or other panelists. As a host, it may be helpful to inform your participants how you would like to use this feature at the start of the meeting or webinar. For example, many webinar hosts use this feature to know if an attendee has a question and would like to be unmuted to speak.

Note: If you're the host, you can also disable the raise hand feature and manage webinar participants and meeting participants that raise their hands.

Prerequisites for using the raise hand feature in a webinar or meeting

To raise your hand in a meeting or webinar:

  • Zoom desktop client: 
    • Windows version 3.5.24604.0824 or higher
    • macOS version 3.5.24604.0824 or higher
    • Linux version 1.1.44485.0317 or higher
  • Zoom mobile app:
    • iOS version 3.5.31169.1102 or higher
    • Android version 3.5.24588.0824 or higher
      Note: Raise hand for hosts and co-hosts requires version 5.4.7 or higher 
  • Join via Zoom web client

To manage participants with raised hands:

  • Webinar host, co-host, or panelist role
  • Host permissions in the meeting, or co-host permission (set by the host)
  • Zoom desktop client: 
    • Windows version 3.5.24604.0824 or higher
    • macOS version 3.5.24604.0824 or higher
    • Linux version 1.1.44485.0317 or higher
  • Zoom mobile app:
    • iOS version 3.5.31169.1102 or higher
    • Android version 3.5.24588.0824 or higher

How to raise your hand in a webinar or meeting

  1. In the meeting/webinar controls, click Reactions reactions-button__1_.png, then click Raise Hand  .
    The host will be notified that you've raised your hand.
    If the host allows you to talk, you may be prompted to unmute yourself. While unmuted, your profile picture and name are displayed to the host and panelists. Only your name is displayed to other attendees.
  2. In the meeting/webinar controls, click Lower Hand to lower it, if needed.
    This will not mute yourself if you are unmuted.

Notes:

  • Windows: You can also use the Alt+Y keyboard shortcut to raise or lower your hand.
  • Mac: You can also use the Option+Y keyboard shortcut to raise or lower your hand.

Linux

  1. In the meeting/webinar controls, click Reactions reactions-button__1_.png, then click Raise Hand  .
    The host will be notified that you've raised your hand.
    If the host allows you to talk, you may be prompted to unmute yourself. While unmuted, your profile picture and name are displayed to the host and panelists. Only your name is displayed to other attendees.
  2. In the meeting/webinar controls, click Lower Hand to lower it, if needed.
    This will not mute yourself if you are unmuted.

Android

  1. In the meeting/webinar controls, tap Reactions reactions-button__1_.png, then tap Raise Hand  .
    The host will be notified that you've raised your hand.
  2. If the host allows you to talk, you may be prompted to unmute yourself. While unmuted, your profile picture and name are displayed to the host and panelists. Only your name is displayed to other attendees.
  3. Tap Reactions reactions-button__1_.png again, then tap Lower Hand to lower it, if needed.
    This will not mute yourself if you are unmuted.

iOS

  1. In the meeting/webinar controls, tap Reactions reactions-button__1_.png then tap Raise Hand  .
    The host will be notified that you've raised your hand.
  2. If the host allows you to talk, you may be prompted to unmute yourself. While unmuted, your profile picture and name are displayed to the host and panelists. Only your name is displayed to other attendees.
  3. Tap Reactions reactions-button__1_.png again, then tap Lower Hand to lower it, if needed.
    This will not mute yourself if you are unmuted.

Web client

  1. In the meeting/webinar controls, click Reactions reactions-button__1_.png, then click Raise Hand  .
    The host will be notified that you've raised your hand.
    If the host allows you to talk, you may be prompted to unmute yourself. While unmuted, your profile picture and name are displayed to the host and panelists.
    Note: Only your name is displayed to other attendees.
  2. In the meeting/webinar controls, click Lower Hand to lower it, if needed.
    This will not mute yourself if you are unmuted.

Telephone

If you join the webinar by phone, dial *9 to raise and lower your hand.
